loss of Electric (power failure)
Well the power here was out for an hour. I hate that. It was creepy sitting
here in the dark waiting for it to come back onNo clue why it was out, but I am glad it is back on.What do you do then the electric goes out? Do you have candles you light? Flashlights? Coal oil lights?
What do you do to pass the time?
What is the longest amount of time you remember being with out power?
Tell me your lights out stories.

We were without power for four days a few months ago. We lit candles, had the woodstove cranked up and everyone slept in the livingroom to keep warm. We read books, talked, laughed and occasionally would go drive around to see if anyone else had power!!
I know there were a few days at my house we didnt have power for about 10 days… it sucked…. but my now soon to be x husband and I stayed with my mom and his mom and group went to cleveland. but I know when I was younger we didnt have power for a week and we just played outside and had candles and stuff… but luckly this was in the summer time and didnt ahve to worry about heat just had to figure out how to stay cool.
I remember when I was in high school we were without power for close to two weeks. We had a tornado hit a few blocks from our house and it took out the whole substation so they had to rebuild it before they could get it back online. It was a pretty boring time. I remember our neighbor had a generator so we stayed over there at night because it was summer and about 100 degrees. But during the day we stayed at our house mostly. I remember we drove around alot and visited a lot of relatives that lived within driving distance. And ate a ton of fast food since we couldn’t cook.
After the daylight is gone, we use candles. We have flashlights ready, but use them only for emergencies (walking outside at night, etc.). I have had all of my electric stoves in each house switched out to be gas stoves. We never lose gas power, just electricity. My husband also has a generator (actually two) but they are solely used for refrigerators and one furnace.
We color by candle light but also play story games where which only involves our voice. Not games like “I Spy”!!!! We take baths by candle light – really slow ones, to pass the time. And, we simply go to bed earlier.
4 days was the longest I remember being without electricity – it was after a horrible ice storm Jan 2002.
I have two children that are afraid of the dark. When the lights go out, we PANIC!!!!! Lol! Actually, in Fort Worth we get lots of brief power outtages and interruptions during the spring storms. I’ve already lost power 6 times this spring alone. I keep a case of AA batteries on hand, with plenty of flashlights. We have cats that tend to mess with the candles, so I use those very sparingly. Two summers ago, we lost power for 8 days. My husband was working overnight at the time, so we just slept during the hot part of the day and played at night. We have windows in every room, so those were as wide open as possible. He was working at Wal-Mart at the time, so several times I drove the kids up there after midnight and let them wander the store. A few hours here and there is fun, but I sure hope our power never stays out that long again!
Congrats on the baby hamsters!
Eh. We have candles, we have flashlights. I can’t remember when the power was out for a long time last. But when they had blackouts during WWII, my dad’s family would play with his electric train set. It had all kinds of little lights, and since it was a passenger train, all the passenger car windows illuninated.
The longest I went without power was all night, in Lititz. It was very cold, it was in the winter and I had made the mistake of washing my hair so it was very wet. I huddled under blankets and shivered most of the night. We keep oil lamps in the house now, so if we run out of electric, we just light them up.
I keep a few oil lamps on hand. A few years ago we were out for about two days after a tornado went through our area. We’d go somewhere part of the time where there was power since we couldn’t do much at our house.
This spring we’ve only had some blinks in spite of storms. The other night I again laid a flashlite where I could easily find it if we lost power but it only blinked off once.
It’s really such nice information to get advantage from.
