A little bit about Jeremiah
This is going to be a short little post. I just wanted to share a few facts about the prophet Jeremiah and who he was.
Jeremiah name means Yaweh will lift up
Jeremiah lived about a hundred years after the prophet Isaiah. The nation of Israel was no longer a unified nation. It had become two nations: Israel and Judah. Israel was destroyed over 100 years before the time of Jeremiah by Assyria.
He prophesied to Judah. After the destruction of Israel, Judah continued to exist for about a century and a half until being overthrown by the Babylonians.
Jeremiah’s prophecies of warning went largely unheeded by the people of Judah. He continually warned that Jerusalem would be captured and the inhabitants exiled.
Jeremiah prophesied during the reigns of many kings: beginning in the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah (626 BC), and then Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, Zedekiah, and the short rule of Gedaliah ben Ahikam who was assassinated (585 BC).
Jeremiah was ruled an outlaw during the reign of Zedekiah and put in detention until Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the city.
After the destruction of Jerusalem Jeremiah was forced to live in Egypt. Jeremiah lived a few years in Egypt and then died there.
