Lesbian Couple’s House Torched, Insurance Company Refuses to Act on Claim
Tennessee residents Carol Ann and Laura Stutte returned to their home after having left town to celebrate their anniversary only to find that their dream home had been torched.
Change.org has the details:
Despite numerous police reports documenting a neighbor that had threatened to burn down their home and who repeatedly told them the “…only thing better than one dead queer was two dead queers…” no arrests have been made.
The Stutte home had no gas service and was all electric. Even with witness reports of two explosions and a fireball that could be seen above the treeline, that all waterhoses on the property had been cut and that “QUEER” had been painted on their garage the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, Tennesse Bureau of Investigation and FBI have yet to rule the fire as an arson.
Nearly six months have gone by, and no one has been arrested for the crime. Moreover, the FBI won’t confirm or deny whether they’re investigating the incident as a hate crime. And to top it all off, the Stutte’s insurance company, American National Property and Casualty (ANPC), has not processed the couple’s claim on their house, despite the fact that the Stutte’s ANPC policy guarantees coverage of living expenses for up to 24 months after a disaster like having your house burned to the ground by an arsonist.
Imagine, if you will, how hard it is for some to pay their mortgage from month to month. Now imagine, that not only do you have to pay a mortgage and insurance on a home that no longer exists, but you have to pay for an additional place to live. Why? If they default on their mortgage, their insurance coverage could be canceled. The the insurance company would be off the hook.
Demand that Demand American National Property and Casualty honor their policy with this family. Call them, fax them, or email them. Public pressure will force them to act. The fax link below will allow you to send an online fax using a free fax service. Please, tie up their phone lines, their fax lines. Add your name to this petition and show your support for the Stutte family and your outrage at American National Propery and Casualty (ANPAC).

Thank you. I’ll TRY.OH that is so upsetting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It would be easier to sue the insurance company than to rely on public pressure to give them a guilty conscience. Especially if they can prove discrimination.
=/@Diva_Jyoti_3 - ”Do or do not, there is no try.”
hat is despicable. and I agree with @AceValentineRocks. Perhaps they should be calling on the anti discrimination organizations for some help.
I’m not one to tell people to get an attorney but these women should have retained a lawyer already. Insurance absolutely covers arson and the company should have paid this loss. There’s got to be more to it than we’re being told.
Thats so terrible – they should get a lawyer!!!
Wow, this makes my heart very sad
To be fair insurance companies try as hard as possible never to cut a check to anyone, gay or straight. And the FBI usually doesn’t comment on ongoing investigations.
How people can do things like this… I don’t understand. People are people, above everything else. @agnophilo - Good call.
Petition has been signed. It might not do much, but it’s better than doing nothing.
