  • Books and Movies – the real truth

Whats the point of making a movie based on a book? Whenever the movie is mentioned, someone has always has to respond with, “The book was better”!!!

I Am Number 4 by Pittacus Lore.

I have read the book. I really really enjoyed the book. I have not seen this movie yet. I have read some really bad reviews about the movie so I am not sure if I am going to see it, but it was a good book.

Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause

When talking about this one. I know of many people who raised many complaints about the movie and how it varied from the book. People say about how the book is better. I agree. That being said I did enjoy the movie if looked at totally separate from the book.

30 Days of Night by Steve Niles

This again the books are so much better. I went to see the movie in the theater because of how much I enjoyed the books and Comics. I was so disappointed. The movie ruined one of the key elements of the story line and made it that the rest of the comics could not be made into movies in the form that they were because the one main aspect of the storyline had been ruined. So I did not watch the second movie that they brought out.

The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman

Ok when talking about this movie and the books…. I have to admit that I do love the movie, but and this is a big but, a lot of the story was removed. They removed a lot of what was considered controversial. That and they never made movies #2 and #3.

    Harry Potter

I have to mention Harry Potter in this post or people will wonder why I didn’t. I know they are movies based on books but I can’t really comment on them as I have not read the books or watched the movies.

    Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer

Coming out of the fan closet….I enjoyed the books. There I said it. I really enjoyed reading the books. I have read all of them…more then once. Big fan of the books. I do not like the movies. I still have not watched Eclipse. I just don’t like them. I am not a fan of Robert Pattinson. I know that some people might be picking up stones wanting to stone me at that statement but it is the truth. I am not a fan of him. I don’t like the movies. I would have preferred that the movies never be made as they have tanted my like of the books.

Flowers in the Attic by V. C. Andrews

V.C. Andrews books are really good. I have read most of the books that have been written. I will stick with the books 100%.

Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice

This is another author that I love. I have read so many of her books. They are just so good. This movie was not horrible but their is just something about the book that is so much better. She is a great writer.

They have some in the works that I have read the books and wonder how the movies will be.

The Forest of Hands and Teeth is a great book. There are three books of the series out and they are really good. I can’t help but hope that the movie will not disappoint me.

The Hunger Games - I have read the trilogy twice and I am really rooting for the movie.

Maximum Ride – This is another great book series that they are talking about making into movies.

What movies based on books have you seen that were not near as good as the books? Are there any movies based on books where you like the movie better?

  • i like the harry potter books and movies, but for different reasons i guess.
i love the twilight series, and the movies don’t measure up, but i didn’t like edward or bella in the books so hating them in the movies is no stretch for me. that being said, i love peter facinelli, nikki reid, kellan lutz, ashley greene, and especially dakota fanning and jackson rathbone <3 (so, most of the side characters essentially. and i like seeing how they did the effects even if they are terrible)
i saw golden compass before i read the book, so i liked it (i LOVE nicole kidman) but the book was definitely different haha.

  • totally don’t agree with you about the golden compass. love the books but thought the movie was RUBBISH! didn’t realize 30 days of night was a book, so i may have to pick it up and give it a read.
on the flip side Forrest Gump was an awful book. at one point he goes into space with an orangutan so it’s a good thing they left that out.

  • “The Notebook,” by Nicholas Sparks. The book is good, but I think the movie is much better.

“The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” by C.S. Lewis. Another great book, but the movie- WOW!
“The Wizard of Oz,” by L. Frank Baum. Book wasn’t bad, but the movie is just fantastic!

  • Great question! I liked “The Shawshank Redemption” movie better than the book. OH! And, “Under The Tuscan Sun”…the movie incorporates excerpts from the book but also has the stunning Tuscan views and gorgeous characters.
“The Color Purple” is my all time favorite book. And the movie? Brilliant. Not quite on par but close. :)

  • i don’t read novel, so i can’t compare..

    i just watch movies

as to what’s the point of making a movie from a book, well, there’s a lot of points, actually..   not from the perception of the fans of the book, however, most of the times..

to make a good movie, you need to create a good storyline, and good script..  taking a good book, you can start off at the half way line…   so it’s easier…    not to mention, promotion is also partially done by the book..

  • Yay!  Someone mentioned Blood and Chocolate!  I haven’t seen the movie, but it’s one of my favorite YA Fantasy books.

  • Hm, trying to think of a movie I liked better than the book and the book came first… Can’t think of any, but there are a handful of movie novelizations that I liked better than the movie. Geoffrey Card’s novelization of God’s Army comes to mind.

The reason why movies are made of books is because lots of people won’t read the books, but merchandise needs to be sold.

Oh I remember! Anything written by Dan Brown is way better in a movie than in a book. He has great ideas, but his writing is awful. Way too much foreshadowing, way too many over explanations. He should write screenplays.

    Agreed

    OP:
I like movies and their books differently. I know that they can’t have everything in the book in the movie. And I do know I like both for different reasons.

  • The only book I thought the movie was better ws Christmas with the Kranks. The book was okay, but I love the movie.

And as far as all the other movies I’ve seen based on books, I like them even if they are quite different from the books they were based on.

  • My Sister’s Keeper, the movie = tragedy. I was SO pissed when that movie came out, everything from the casting to the botched ending absolutely infuriated me. I’ve had to watch several clips of Jane Eyre movies for a class this semester, and many of those are frustrating as well. I mean, how hard can it be to at least find an actress who looks the way the character is described in the book? I’m really pleased with the newest one that just came out, though.

I guess at some point you have to accept that most book-based movies are all a director’s fantasy, a completely different story that just happens to have the same name as the original.
