  • Nathan Phelps: Escaping Westboro Baptist Church

Nate Phelps is the son of Fred Phelps, infamous pastor of Kansas’ Westboro Baptist Church, an entity which asserts that “God Hates Fags,” that President Obama is the AntiChrist, and that the terrorist attacks of 9/11 were God’s punishment upon the United States.

One of 13 children, Nate ultimately broke away from his father’s extreme Calvanist teaching (and the emotional and physical abuse he asserts was prevalent in the Phelps home) at the age of eighteen. He built a new life, declared himself an atheist and is now on the front lines against Westboro, religion, child abuse, and is a strong supporter of the LGBT community.

    Nate’s website is http://www.natephelps.com

  • that is awesome to hear that he got away, but sad he had to grow up in that house hold. I really don’t hate people, but I fucking hate Fred Phelps. As for all of the people who follow them I have a mix between extreme dislike and pity, because they are obviously completely mindless sheep who haven’t opened the bible for themselves. It is good to know that his son made an educated decision and thought for himself instead of following what his dad said. Atheism is really the only logical option anyway afterall

  • This is so interesting to listen to. I’ve heard a lot about WBC, but never got too involved in it. I just visited Nate Phelps’ blog. And also I just was on the WBC website and I could not believe everything I was seeing. Firstly, it’s called godhatesfags?? And there’s a ticker on the side counting how many people God has sent to Hell since I logged onto the site. These people are delusional and full of hate. Sometimes I wish I never got so interested in what was going on in the world today, because it just makes me so sad to see all this hate and fear. And to think that there are so many people that hate me out there, just because I am bisexual… it’s scary. But just because it’s scary, doesn’t mean I’ll stop fighting for what is right! Thanks for putting this up. More people need to learn what the WBC really is.

  • Good for him! Finally there is some hope!

Ugh, that horrible, awful, menacing family.

  • That dreadful church makes Atheism look very attractive.

  • I don’t believe that church to be a church at all unless evil demons are in charge…People like them that say they are Christians give true believer like me a black eye because of their actions….and believe me their actions are not the actions of a real believer They are a cult the same as Charles Manson’s They are full of hate and destruction

They were in my home town a couple of years ago and the were picket my home church when we lost one of our longtime members son that lost his life in Afghanistan our Pastor is a wonderful beautiful lady she walked to the curb where they were and told them to leave when they wouldn’t several bikers that knew the young man and his family escorted them the property and and pushed them back over a block and told them they were not welcome any where near our church family…

  • I remember being terrified of going to hell when I was a child.  More than going to hell, I was terrified that I was going to die young and then go to hell because of my sins.  My parents had me convinced that every time I did anything wrong, God chopped a day off my life.  It makes me laugh that there are so many churches that try to distance themselves from Westboro Baptist when they preach the same hate.  The difference is, they wrap it up in prettier packages.

  • Just found your blog. You are AWESOME. Should write a book. I would LOVE to read it. For now though, your blog will do. Again you are AWESOME!
