Assalamu alaikum or Shalom Aleichem
Hijar asked if I would do this so here it is.
Why I cover my hair. I believe that the bible says that I should. I veil all of my hair. At this point I do not cover my neck but I am thinking of doing so. I am even thinking of the possibility of switching to niqab. I am trying my best to be modest. And I have been studying about niqab. And it just seems like it would be very modest to wear niqab. I know that most would consider me very very modest already....but sometimes I just feel really drawn to niqab.
I believe that the bible tells us that we should be modest and also that part of modesty is covering our hair. I also want to make it easier for my "brothers" to keep their mind pure. It would not be right for me as their sister to tempt them to sin.
The social results of choosing to cover my hair: I have been called many different names. I have also been told to go back to where I came from which I find slightly funny because I am white as a ghost and was born in Lancaster County Pennsylvania..where would they like me to go?
Reactions to my head-covering in the work place: I am a stay at home mom so my home is my work place. I will say this though...everyone at my children's school recognizes me and knows who my children are so I never have to explain who I am and what I am there for. They know me by sight :)
How to wear the style (or styles) of head-coverings that I wear...
http://kristenmomof3.xanga.com/692685081/there-are-many-many-different-ways-that-you-can-tie-your-head-sarf/Why I chose one particular style head-covering over another... I believe I should cover all of my hair. That is why. I am still studying about covering my neck (which I do at times and other times not) and about Niqab.
How deciding to cover my hair has improved my life...I feel that G-d has blessed me for follow it.

Perhaps the modest scriptures were references to being showing. I am not sure that God is concerned with you covering every part of your body but if that makes you and your husband happy then that is all that matters.
@TheTheologiansCafe - well, there also is 1 cor 11 which tells a women to veil too :)
@HajarsSpring - Thank you for encouraging me to write this. I have been blessed reading your blog.
When I've often had to explain the basis for my haircovering, I've fallen back on the Scriptures and the teachings of the Saints. Explaining it can be difficult, but I have found the same things as you about the societal and work reactions. Some people think I'm Jewish, others Amish, mostly because I cover the crown of my head and not fully. It's been a great and unintentional moment to witness, and people always know who you are, and not just for the covering, but how it affects us: womanly, modest, compassionate, etc.
The thing that gets me is if one chooses to do the oposite of the things you're choosing to do, and someone says something about it, they are attacked.
But when someone says something negative to you about your choices, they are generally supported.
Double standard!!!
If you get a chance later would you stop by my site and leave trev a get well message?: http://nidan.xanga.com/703700436/still-sick/
@Kristenmomof3 - Interesting post. If it makes you and your hubby happy then you'll find no complaints from me. Although... I'm half-expecting a similar situation that happened with the other burqa post (cue pretentious morons... now).
This was interesting to read
I really have no problem with your...or others covering their hair. We have quite a few Mennonites and here in our town who all wear hair coverings of one type or another. I do agree that it shows modesty and a certain devotion to God. But I also feel like I am not being immodest by not covering my hair. As I have said before, I think it is possible to be modest or immodest, in the same type of dress...depending upon what your HEART is!!! Just like the swimming apparel that you showed us...to me some of those are very sexy and provocative, even though they are covering a lot of the body.
As I said...I have no problem with you and others who choose to cover their hair, I hope that you have no problem with those of us who choose not to!!
In His Love,
Ruth Ann

I am not too sure this is going to work any too well.... but here goes anyway!
I tend to wear 'grandad collars' on my blouses (sort of standing up collars) which conceals my collar bone and back of neck which I find solves the problem of too much flesh.
I find the longer scarfs that hang down too far - difficult to work in - cleaning out baths, gardening etc -so I have a shortie headscarf - but for shabbat.. well
then that is the time to bring out the 'posh' dressy up veils... just need to exercise a little caution when lighting the shabbat candles
Great post! Your explanations sound a lot like mine, and I'm glad I'm not the only non-Muslim considering niqab. I love it, but I am holding off because I was told by several people that they see my wearing hijab as intimidating and I don't want to offend people. So for now I switch on and off between tying it behind my head and hijab-style covering my neck, and I'll have to deal with niqab later.
I timestamped this because someone sent me a message asking and so here is my response that I wrote on this topic about a month ago.
The only thing that really matters is how you and Barry feel about it. Nobody else's opinion should matter as to how you dress.
be careful about Niqaab, dear. i understand you want more modesty, but it truly depends on where you are, right? i personally believe there's a reason why (and I speak from a Muslim perspective) Islam has Hijaab as an obligation, but Niqaab as optional; because Islam is wisdom. if you live in a place where covering your face is more normal, then sure, go for it! i would! i think it's amazing. but living in the UK, where a Niqaab could bring me danger, then i would take this as the reason why Allah didn't instruct women to cover their faces, also, and would avoid that. this was a beautiful and interesting post. thankyou for sharing. :)
salaam
