Hearing
I rely on Close Captioning when watching TV.1) To those who watch TV. Do you ever use CC? What do you think of the quality of CC? (its frustrating when it is messed up. You would think that by law
they would have to do a really really good job of it but sometimes it is really
bad)2) Is anyone here sensitive to noise and what do you do to help with
the problem? There is a misconception in the “normal” hearing world that the only people
who sign or use Closed Caption are the deaf (meaning in their thoughts, People who can’t hear anything). That is simply not true. There are
many “hearing people” like me out there (many don’t ever ever talk about their
problem) who either are hyper sensitive or have another issue with
hearing, but can still hear some, but use Sign language and Close caption also.It is an issue that isn’t talked about enough. I think because there is a stigma attached to people who hear differently by many
people. If you talk to me somewhere where more then just you are talking chances are I wont understand what you said. When there are 2 or more people talking it all just blends together as noise.
I also hate talking on the phone. What do you think?

Do you think it is from your fibro?? When things get really loud here, I need to go to another room….
It does not happen too often…but it does….
Even people crossing my path too quickly…like when our 2 dogs run around then my daughter is with them…I call it sensory overload…..after all fibro is a CNS disorder..
Blessings on your day
I grew up in an A capella church! There a few of the songs I’m really nastalgic about!
I’m kinda screwed with my hearing! I can’t hear if it’s too low but then it does hurt if it’s too loud. I’ve been known to wear earplugs in church but then I can read lips really well because I was born deaf.
That might not work so well for you!
I hope everything works out for you. I’ll remember to keep you in my prayers!
Occasionally I turn CC on when I’m trying to keep the noise level down for sleeping people in the house. I also might turn it on if it’s too loud in the house and I can’t hear the TV. I have noticed that they skip things sometimes and there is a delay.
The only time I can say I really “use” CC is at the gym. You have to have headphones to hear it or else just read the captions. It gets VERY annoying because it is always lagged and they do a very poor job. It does provide entertainment though at the poor spelling of words sometimes. I did find it interesting that one day on the show “The View” (only watched it because it was on the TV above my machine at the gym) they started a discussion about breastfeeding…. the word breastfeeding appeared and then they did not caption any more of that conversation…. nothing. Just “discussion about feeding children” appeared until they changed topics. I thought that was rather odd.
I am not sensitive to noise but my husband is losing his hearing (a genetic thing, his whole family is going deaf) and sometimes he has the TV on SOOOOOO loud it hurts. I need to invest in special “ears” for him to hear and the rest of us can enjoy TV at a reasonable decible level. Now we just leave the room.
Yup, I indeed was a nun; miss the spiritual life so bad!
love,
Lisa
I like to keep the tv around 2 or 3 volume wise. I have to say, I never think to use the CC though. I definetly have problems with sensory overload, which is more of the reason I like it quiet. I have two very talkative little girls, and having both of them talking and the tv going and the fish tank filter running and the dog snoring is usually WAY too much for me. Throw in a clock and I am done. ; )
The band at our church is extrememly loud. But in that situation, I’m good. It helps me focus on worship, because I can’t hear anything else. Rise up and worship like a storm!
CC drive me nuts. I use CC when we need it quiet for a phone call or just to cut down on noise.
Around here, the CC is too far behind. And whoever does the typing is not a very good speller.
I agree that the hearing aids are going to be big business in the next decade or so as children from the 60′s to present day pay dearly for their loud music….which to me has always been noise.
Also, isn’ t it “funny” that something that causes harm to hearing has entered the church. Maybe someone doesn’t want us to have faith….”faith cometh by HEARING, and HEARING by the word of God” HMMMMM new food for thought
I saw you on my footprints and just stopped in to say hello. No, I never use cc. I don’t watch a lot of TV.
But when I do the sound doesn’t usually bother me. However I do think when it’s very loud it isn’t good
for your ears.
Be blessed,
Linda
1) I’ve given up on TV and only watch DVDs and certain programs I can stream on the internet (like Dancing with the Stars). I’ve see the CC and I think it’s pretty poor oft times.
2) Sometimes I get sensitive to noise, but most of the time not.
3) Thank goodness I don’t attend an “entertainment” church.
@nidan - I love A ccapella. I think it is the best way to sing
@KimNeyer - yes it is a problem. Some stuff is really good quality though. I think all things that aren’t live should be good quality CC as they have the time to do it properly. There is no excuse for bad CC if it is a pretaped program.
@ttfly - A loud band in a church make it vibrate in my ears and give me a headache the rest of the day. Churches don’t think about how loud music in church can actually drive some people away. they do it supposedly to draw people in. I will stick with my “old fashioned” way of singing please. no loud bands for me
@rubieslegacy - I think all things that aren’t live should be good quality
CC as they have the time to do it properly. There is no excuse for bad
CC if it is a pretaped program.
@Mymanyblessings - Thank you for stopping by and commenting
we really dont watch that much tv but when i need to mute it then i have the CC on.
Hi Kristen it’s Erin (ezziestar) from IHP. I just dropped by and was interested to read your post. I also use CC. I read very quickly and find it difficult to tune out background noise, although I have no hearing problems
I have a 5 month old, so I use CC sometimes when I’m nursing him and I don’t want him to be distracted by the sound. I also use it at the gym when I don’t have my headphones and I want to “see” what’s going on. Sometimes it is really bad! Especially with homophones and proper names.
I taught music for 8 years, and it’s amazing the things we desensitize our ears to that really can do a lot of damage…things like hairdryers and electric tools. I have a lot of sinus and allergy problems and I have one ear that pops every time I hear something with a specific sound, like the scanner beeping at the store or even some of the digital music in my sons toys. I don’t think I have any hearing loss in that ear, but it’s something that’s just a pain. If the sound is too bad, just plug my ear with my finger. I am in a worship band at church, but I agree that things can be too loud. Our church used to mic the drums!!!! It was insane. We don’t have a drummer now, so it’s not an issue.
Just stopped by to read a little. I never thought about how the worship music could really bother some people… it is a good point, though.
1) I have had friends who watch CC, who are trying to learn English better. That way they can see the word as well as hear it. I think CC is good, as long as it doesn’t obstruct with the view of the show/movie (I had that happen once, it was a little annoying… but it didn’t bother me after a while). Also – It seems like when I start “tuning into” the CC, I don’t really watch as much of the movie because I’m reading instead, but it doesn’t truly bother me. Around Christmas 2007, I watched “The Nativity Story” with the CC on – it helped because I was in a group of young college kids, the acoustics of the room weren’t all that great to hear the words well, plus the people had a rather thick accent – so with those 3 factors combined, the CC definitely helped a lot!
2) I have struggled with sensitivity to noise at times… I’m certain it’s not in the same manner as a person with autism would, but I know when I’m extremely stressed I need a lot of quiet.
Hi, I wandered over from a comment you made on someone else’s page…
I like use CC at times especially if kids need to be working on schoolwork so I don’t distract them. It can also help kids with their reading.
I think lots of people use CC
Many Muslim musicians also perform a form of
a cappella
music, which are called
anasheed
. most likely due to many musical instruments being prohibited by Islam.
And I have to say just because there are not instruments as accompaniment in church that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not too loud. Some people’s clapping along is Way too loud for me and I am the kind of person who will stand up front at a concert and not mind how loud it is. And I love loud Christian metal bands and rock music and attend a great music festival. I do know lots of people who go to concerts and even band members who wear safety earplugs during concerts.
And shape note singers can certainly raise those decibels with no instruments!
I would guess though that the quality of the sound system and design of your church building may exacerbate the ‘noise’ problem.
I know a man who developed a hearing problem which increasingly made him more and more sensitive to sound. He now wears hunting safety ear protection when at church or seminary chapel. Hopefully you will not have to do that but please know there is hearing protection out there so you don’t further damage your hearing. Maybe just try earplugs and see how that works – you can still hear what most people say unless they are very softspoken (like me).

oh, and where did you get the statistics for the counter at the top of your page? I thought it was interesting.
hmm… it’s odd how the previously posted comment broke up the formatting. sorry about the weird look.
@corivoo - yeah, I don’t think a lot of churches think about how the loud music actually drives some people away from their church
@marycarimom - I got the counter at http://www.livingwaters.com
Oh wow, Thank you for this post.
I am doing a presentation on Autism, and I had forgotten to mention this part in my outline! ; )
(so perfect timing!!)
My brother is Autistic so I know exactly what you are talking about with hyper-sensitive hearing, when we were in England a really cool British doctor made a special (very uniquly made for Aaron- my autistic brother) pair of filtering earplugs. These ear plugs filtered out the high pitches (like when Baby’s scream, or you are in a group setting and you can hear that “hum,” or “buzz” of voices, and also the noises that are really bad at a Concert). But alas, remember my brother is Autistic, for some reason or another when we moved back to the states about a year later he flushed them down the toilet!!! (crazy dude– those things costs a fortune!!) — AND of course he wanted them back as soon as he had done that! — So we commissioned some new ones, but they were not as good as that first pair. (as they were just made by following the “plan” /”design” but made in America, by Americans ; P) — I blame the latter part as the fault, what say you?
Haha, and I totally understand about Churches, we walk in a church and if Aaron covers his ears after 5 min. we are out of there… –heehee– Me, My sister, and her boyfriend actually do the music at our church, and we can gage how he is doing with the sound level.
Thanks again, for the fun read,
~Lael
@Contextual_Observer - thank you for the wonderful comment. One of the last churches we visited we walked in the door and the music they play before church was blaring….I was like oh no get me out of here.
So now it is just churches that use only piano and that type of thing.
the electric guitar seems to be one of the worst on my ears.
thank you for visiting
I watch CC all the time ince I am profoundly deaf, yes, it is annoying when CC get all messed up. The law that we got is outdated and need a serious overhaul.
