Warning….these are some of the sadder pictures from Hayloft Candle Barn and Petting Zoo and a few of the reasons that I think someone should step in and something should be done about this place….

The goat’s yucky water source

The goat’s empty food source

More pictures of empty food dishes and gross water supplies. I have many many more pictures of empty food and gross water then I am going to post as it does get repetitive.

This is the water dish for the two donkey’s. It is hard to see but it is not working right and they are not able to get water.

Here is their empty food holder

This is where they have to live. None of the animals have grass in their area.

The bunny’s empty food holder.

These are a bunch of baby ducks

This is a water source…would you drink from that???

This last water dish isn’t even connected to a water line.

Empty food bowls mean nothing. Most of the time our own plates are empty and in a cubbard. How about the animals? Do they look starved? I don’t see their ribs. The water thing? I dunno, but animals don’t need Dansi.
The food thing, I dunno. But the water should at least be fresh. Not with crap floating in it.
Wow that’s a sad case.Unlike the people above me that commented I think both bowls should be full.Especially the water. And especially in the summer heat. But the animals do look healthy. So they are obviously fed right!-lol-
I love the deer pics:P
What’s amazing is that some people choose to live in conditions very similar to that.
This looks pretty deplorable. The food I can live with. They do look “healthy” in the sense that they get enough to eat. But their coats and furst don’t look healthy at all. The water is very bad. That should always be full and without any algae in it. The fence is a health risk if that goat can squeeze under it.
Unfortunately, depending on which state this is in, many states do not have adequate laws to protect animals in cases like that. For example, here in NC you “only” need to provide an animal adequate shelter and food and water (which can bee a doghouse, a water and a food bowl) – not very encouraging, is it?
poor babies need clean water~!
Kristen-Did you see inside the buildings? They may have moved the food and water inside. Sometimes waters also work on a demand system..they know what to do to get it. That way water isn’t slopped all the time as Animals tend to do. As much of a tourist area as that is, I hightly doubt that they would allow abuse. The animals look healthy.
@elainef - They have those white domes as shelter and you can see the whole inside of those. The goats have a little shed that you can see the whole inside. The only thing I couldn’t tell you is what the pigs and 1/2 the birds have inside. The rest you can see everything
Animals should have water all the time and clean…both inside and out of buildings…food well, maybe they were fed in the morning and won’t have food until night…I feel bad for the animals.
Interesting…!
I feel bad for them!
I can understand perhaps if, with that many animals to tend to, that a water dish may be overlooked by accident, but there are many water dishes emptied….and the ones that DO have water have nasty water that I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole. That’s just not acceptable! As for the food, as someone mentioned, it is possible that they are fed on a schedule instead of being allowed to graze throughout the day. But then again, they aren’t dogs..My dogs are on a feeding schedule (easie rto keep track of what they eat, how much, and when they have to poop!). But these are farm animals. They should at least have grass to graze on if they are fed on a schedule and always, always have fresh clean water. Even if my standards for pets are extremely high, I still find these conditions to be completely unacceptable. I’m glad I didn’t visit there..I’d be madder than a hornet seeing such conditions in person like that…something SHOULD be done! I don’t understand how this can still continue in a place that’s a tourist attraction at that. Could you bring your photographic evidence to a humane society or law enforcement and see if something can be done? If nothing more, I’d at least think they’d check the place out and get them to ‘clean up their act’, although I don’t think people that can’t take of their animals should have any in the first place! What’s the point in having a pet if you can’t give it proper care and do nothing with it?
@atthefeetofmyFather - I actually talked to PETA about it and there isn’t much that can be done because of the lack of protection by the laws for animals in petting zoos in Pennsylvania. It is horrible but not much can be done legally. The lack of legal protection for these animals is the reason groups like ALF (animal liberation federation) exist. It is just so sad. I wish I could do something to help these animals.
Most animals don’t have food out 24/7, and are usually fed on a schedule, so I don’t think it’s unusual that you don’t see food. They all look pretty well fed to me, and not sickly. The water sources are pretty gross though, and they should have water available at all times. As for the animals not having grass in their areas, it’s hard to maintain grass growth when they’re eating it and trampling it all the time.
STRIKE OUT #1, appearance, the photos don’t promise a an unpleasant atmosphere. It’s tough being an animal when there is nothing in the holding area of interest or natural to his comfort.
STRIKE OUT #2, Water, Animals should never be UNABLE to get to clean water and the dishes appear filthy.
FOOD DISHES, good zoos would never use those dishes and zoos do have money problems like this small place probably has. Having seen animals fed in our zoo, food bowls if used are stainless steel, clean, bright and shiny and NEVER ANY PAINT ON THEM, NOTICE PHOTO 5 PAINTED WATER SOURCE. A lot of food is offered on the floor of our zoo pens to be hosed out afterward.
FOOD can be too much for animals, some will eat and eat and founder themselves DYING PAINFULLY so it’s questionable as to the quality and the amount of food. The animals appear fed BUT …
STRIKE OUT #3, Animal care, notice photo #11, the hairless hip of the donkey. That indicates the animal is lying regularly where whatever he is lying on is destructive to his body part, i.e. no bedding. If the place has no bedding, no grass, only dusty mud, I’d say the care is much less than adequate. If the animals hair has tiny little white things all over the individual hairs, that would be lice, another real indication of what goes on if there. The overall appearance of coats is unkempt, unbrushed and nasty if the photos are an indication.
BABY DUCKS, that holding area appears to have bird crap all over the sides, Filthy for man and beast.
I’d say, contact whoever it is in your city who has anything to do with animal care. They will be the deciding factor and if your country isn’t big on animal rights I wouldn’t hold your breath for a good resolution. I have mixed emotions per how animal rights activists do some things but I still believe all living creatures UNDER OUR CARE (and these people have opted to have animals under their care) deserve the best we can give them to offset their captivity. My conclusion from the photos is these animals are not getting what I believe they deserve.
Have a good week, thanks for caring. We need more people who care and good luck with your thought processes which will lead you to your next move.
I just saw a letter from the Governor of Pennsylvania, I think on television regarding the “puppy mills” in that state. Also terrible condition with few laws to correct. This sounds like you need to write a few letters to your legislators to get this changed. You can go online and get names and addresses of who to write.
