Emo…..Oh the Horror!!!!
(this was done by my husband who gave me permission to take the post from his page…Love you hunny. You can post your responses on my page)
There seems to be a underlying theme among a lot of Christian groups that Emo is a cult that should be eliminated.
Emo is a cult ????????Here are some of the characteristics of a cult lets see how many apply
1 The group displays excessively zealous and unquestioning commitment to its
leader and (whether he is alive or dead) regards his belief system, ideology,
and practices as the Truth, as law. There is no leader of emo
2 Questioning, doubt, and
dissent are discouraged or even punished.there is no Punishment for not being emo
3
Mind-altering practices
(such as meditation, chanting, speaking in tongues, denunciation sessions, and
debilitating work routines) are used in excess and serve to suppress doubts
about the group and its leader(s).No mind altering practices here
4
The leadership dictates,
sometimes in great detail, how members should think, act, and feel (for example,
members must get permission to date, change jobs, marry—or leaders prescribe what
types of clothes to wear, where to live, whether or not to have children, how to
discipline children, and so forth).no leadership so no dictation of rules
5
The group is elitist,
claiming a special, exalted status for itself, its leader(s) and members (for
example, the leader is considered the Messiah, a special being, an avatar—or the
group and/or the leader is on a special mission to save humanity).Emo is not an elitist group
6
The group has a polarized
us-versus-them mentality, which may cause conflict with the wider society.most
groups have this mentallity (feminists, hippies, grunge, punk,
Christianity, politicians) maybe not the last one but you get my point7 The leader is not
accountable to any authorities (unlike, for example, teachers, military commanders
or ministers, priests, monks, and rabbis of mainstream religious denominations).there is no leader.
8
The group teaches
or implies that its supposedly exalted ends justify whatever means it
deems necessary. This may result in members’ participating in behaviors
or activities they would have considered reprehensible or unethical
before joining the group (for example, lying to family or friends, or
collecting money for bogus charities).the group doesn’t teach anything
9
The leadership induces
feelings of shame and/or guilt in order to influence and/or control
members. Often, this is done through peer pressure and subtle forms of persuasion.there is no shame or guilt provided by leadership because there is no leadership
10
Subservience to the
leader or group requires members to cut ties with family and friends, and radically
alter the personal goals and activities they had before joining the
group.there
is no leader to have subservience to but the withdrawal from family is
sometimes common due to the misunderstanding of Emo or some start
listening to emo because they are withdrawn.11
The group is preoccupied
with bringing in new members.Emo is not interested in bringing in new members
12
The group is preoccupied
with making money.there is no reason for them to make money (Bands do like to make money though lol)
13
Members are expected to
devote inordinate amounts of time to the group and group-related activities.there are no group activities other than concerts which is basically just a concert
14
Members are encouraged or
required to live and/or socialize only with other group members.most
emo’s I know are friends with anyone that are friends with them some of
the friends they choose are emo some of them don’t even like the emo
music15
The most loyal members (the
“true believers”) feel there can be no life outside the context of the group.
They believe there is no other way to be, and often fear reprisals to themselves
or others if they leave (or even consider leaving) the group.no reprisals for leaving. It is not a special club.
A cult? I would think not.Emo
is a highly misunderstood stereotype. Just as some stereotypes before
it. (Feminism and Hippie Culture) Emo has had a negative stigma since
is induction as a stereotype rather than the type of music it began as.
The Emo Stereotype has nothing wrong with it, just as the music has
nothing wrong with it. Emo has caused rifts in families not because of
what they are but the misunderstanding of it. The emo genre of music
has not created the Emo but the Emo has created the genre. Just as you
found the music and lifestyle that you prefer the Emo has found the
music and lifestyle to compliment the way they feel about lifeSome of the views of the people I run into are kind of a crude view of the people involved
For example
One
person I recently talked to stated “Emo’s have pity parties and get all
emotional and then the odd one decides to commit suicide.”As a stereotype Emo is described as
Emo is also often associated with a certain fashion. The term “emo” is sometimes stereotyped with tight jeans on males and females alike, long fringe (bangs) brushed to one side of the face or over one or both eyes, dyed black, straight hair, tight t-shirts (sometimes short sleeved) which often bear the names of rock bands (or other designer shirts), studded belts, belt buckles, canvas sneakers or skate shoes or other black shoes (often old and beaten up) and thick, black horn-rimmed glasses Emo fashion has changed with time. Early trends included straight,
unparted hair, tightly fitting sweaters, button-down shirts, and work
jackets. This fashion has at times been characterized as a fad.In recent years the popular media has associated emo with a
stereotype that includes being emotional, sensitive, shy, introverted,
or angsty. It is also associated with depression, self-injury, and suicide. Most
of the outcry against emo tends be because the last sentence. In
recent years the popular media has associated emo with a stereotype
that includes being emotional, sensitive, shy introverted or angsty. It
is also associated with depression, self injury and suicide. For example
Emo music has been blamed for the suicide by hanging
of Hannah Bond by the coroner at the inquest into her death after it
was claimed that emo music glamorized suicide and her apparent
obsession with the emo band, My Chemical Romance was said to be linked to her suicide. The inquest revealed that she was part of an internet “emo” cult and had explained to her parents that her self harming was an “emo initiation ceremony”[28] After an article in NME, fans of emo music contacted the magazine to defend accusations that it promotes self harm and suicide. The
reality of Emo is it is part of culture the same as many other
movements that have happened. Some of the outcomes of the people who
decided to become part of this lifestyle turn out bad they are not
different then those that occurred in other movements. For
Example, the 70′s Free Love movement caused many young people to
relocate to San Fransisco causing many of them to become homeless
beggars. Many people would not identify these people as a cult but a
physical representation of the changing times. It is the same as people
who are Emo they are a physical representation of the ideas of some of
the people of this changing time.On the subject of self-harm,
depression and suicide. These three sad supposed promotions are a
reality that have existed long before the emo stereotype even evolved
in to what it is today. Even if it is mentioned in some of the songs it
is a reality. I know a few people who would be considered a
self-harmer. The reality is that for some of them it is the only place
that it seems that someone understands and rather than causing the
self-harm it actually prevents. You see people in the world find horror
in that fact that they would self-harm and the stigma with Emo as it is
only propitiates the the shame they feel when they harm themselves
because of the anger some parents and friends seem to have when they
see the person with Emo tendencies. So when they are looking for help
they shy away.Even if you feel that Emo is a evil of this
world do you think that the proper response is hatred or do you think
it should be love and understanding. Love and understanding of a person
who is different from you, who just might need a friend just like you.
A friend who don’t want to change the way they feel but see them
through the times of depression and self-harm. Would that not be a
better reaction.Well now its up to you.. I would like to know your opinions, thoughts and even disagreements.
I have a open mind I’ll listen. I just want to know what you think
So
What do you think about Emo?

Emo is just this generation of slackers. Each generation has them and they are called different things but they end up just being in the end “just slackers” not wanting to do anything. Always wanting something for nothing. The easy ride. look throughout history, greasers, flower power, etc. they all end up in history as being slackers. they want attention not deserved! Just my opinion.
I just commented over there
Didn’t know that was your hubby
when it rains it pours
@tx_christian - yes, that’s my husband
@apyus - I in no way understand your comment in relation to the question what do you think about emo.
would you care to explain?
I’ve heard people use that term all the time and I have no idea what it means.
You don’t want to argue with ME
@apyus - I am not trying to argue with you. I just don’t understand your answer and was asking you to expanded. No argument at all. Just asking for clarification.
@Kristenmomof3 - as a devout christian and good communist i would refer you to William James for an explanation. Since he wrote volumes on the subject. And again the book of Ecclesiastices.
I had no idea emo existed!!I I guess I am too old (41) to be up on this stuff. I suspect however after reading this post that Mighty Men of Valor is correct. Twenty-five years from now (probably not that long) emo will be some outdated term. Each generation has their thing and then it passes as they move into middle-age. I know the young hate to hear it, each generation thinks their thing will last but it never does. Emo is a passing fad that matters not in the scheme of things!!! Best for those of us who are Christians to stick with that label and no other, it is the only one that lasts and the only one that matters!!!!
I’m going to have to look emo up before I could properly respond. Sorry that’s just the way I am.
It’s different, that doesn’t necessarily make it bad. Things like the dress and the music and yata yata don’t really make it a bad thing in my mind, that’s just a form of expression… What DOES make it bad, however, is the cutting and suicide, if it is indeed true, and I think it’s bad in the sense that no one should or should have to do that to themselves… Most of us understand loneliness, but we have to find a healthy way to come to terms with it… Cutting and suicide isn’t. Which brings me to a question I have for you:
Have you ever heard of “To write love on her arms?” Your last paragraph (or, I guess it was your husbands) reminded me of it. It’s basically a group that take in people who suffer from depression, a lot of which cut themselves or have suicidal thoughts, and they basically just show them that they’re loved and needed. Really neat group. It really offers people that suffer from this kind of thing a friend to help them get through their problems, and, uses what I think is the best medicine for anything, love. They got one of their slogans from the same place I got the words on my xanga icon that’s on the side of my posts, “Love is the movement,” which is the name of a Switchfoot song. Anyway, just thought I’d ask if you’d heard of it
God Bless,
Chris.
@Soul_in_Motion - yes, I have heard of it
Now being old enough to be your mom and then some….LOL I really thought all emo was about was showiing the fem side of the male….crying, and being sensitive etc…but the way you explained it, it seems to me that it is a fad FOR A DAY for a season…we had the love child, flower child thing when I was in high school…that did fade for some, I still like the music of that generation. There were people commiting suicide when the Beatles while album came out…so someone really engorossed with a band can do that during any generation.
I don’t really hate anyone….I am just a sinner saved by grace thru faith in Jesus….I would like to them, the emo crown, to find Him….they are searching for something fulfiling in their lives…they just don’t know they and all people have a God shaped void in their hearts and He can only fill that longing…not emo, drugs, acohol, food, cutting, or whatever.
Blessings to you and yours.
Emo is different to different people…We in our family think of it as probably artistic and most likely sensitive. I think the heart of the emo person is what counts and will define that particular person, just as the heart and countenance of a cowboy. Good and bad of everything. I guess some emo could cross the line of a rebellious “look” or gait…It’s all about a look and countenance, what message is the person sending? A sweet spirit or a rebellious, mean spirit? Light or Darkness?
Emo is this generations answer to Goth. It really is funny that these things come in waves, just different names. For example, Grunge was merely a movement that consolidated hippy and punk. As for the whole cutting thing, again, that was a goth thing. I don’t have much of an opinion about it…
This post makes me very sad. I think I’ll go cut myself or something.
@yorel - there is nothing funny about joking about that. You have never struggled with cutting and to mock those who do is horrible and very wrong.
Hardcore kudos for this post.
Though as a side note…My Chemical Romance, to the extent of my knowledge, isn’t emo.
@Imp_is_lurking - thanks
Yeah, I dont think MCR is emo either but Hannah Bond’s Parents have called it emo and “emo cult” and blamed it for her death.
I think your post is exceptional. Good write up.
I didn’t think much about him, I just thought he was a childs program. I hadn’t watched enough of him to know any different. However, there are a lot of seemly innocent programs out there, desirous to turn the children away from Christianity. I’ve seen my Christian friends with childrens programs, etc…….: that didn’t seem very Christian like & wonder about these poor children & their parents & why they do not open their eye’s up to the reality of what Satan is trying to do to their children. If I was a parent, my children wouldn’t watch this stuff: for we have thrown the TV out. The only hero’s they’d have is that of which is in the Bible & they’d know the difference between right & wrong.
Now, If I had children before I got saved, then they would be corrupt: like the rest of the world.
I Googled EMO & this is what I got below:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo_(slang)
There are many things wrong with people these days. Is really doesn’t matter what one calls themselves. Every human strives for individuality, however not to many actually will ever find it. More so because in order to find it you must destroy everything you are and have been turned into by parents, society, school, government and religion.
Every one of us, use to be individuals. It last for all of maybe a few minutes, right after your birth. However once you were born you beginning recieving impressions by everyone you come in contact with. Striping you of being you.
Emo is only one of the many stereotypes out there. We use them to classify what we do not understand. Fear from the lack of understanding then gets blown up to great lengths to feed the rich and control the rest.

Find Emo? (the dweeb hiding in the picture)
Save Emo? (the whale)
I don’t think that the question is whether emo is a cult, but whether it’s harmful as a pessimistic, nihilistic, irrational philosophy. It seems like a variety of post-modern relativism. Kids need protection from dumb ideas combined with powerful emotions if they can’t handle them.
An excellent, eloquently presented post indeed. Kudos to your husband (and to you) for exposing yet another stereotype villified by lack of knowledge and media hype. None of the emo I know are cutters, and all the cutters I know aren’t emo. (And cutting itself is about control in a world that seems to lack it for each individual) I really enjoyed this post.
And thank you for stopping by, however fleeting.
@Blessed2BeeAlive - Were you thinking of Elmo??? I am talking about Emo not Elmo
@Nieza_Raven - Thank you for the great comment
@daeshii - Thank you for the great comment.
@YehwehPaladin - Do you understand what Emo means now?
@nidan - that’s ok…do you understand Emo now??
thank you so much for agreeing with me and this is an outstanding post, at this point i believe in the hannah bond situation, the parents are probably just looking for someone or something to point the finger at.. but anyhow, great post and thank you!
If that is a picture of him above, he looks like a dud & his words above are pretty brainless: with a reprobate mind.
Some people are just slackers, but there is actually a cult that suits their needs??
I didn’t know he igsisted until you meantioned this: & here I thought it was just Elmo’s Character that you are talking about.
I didn’t know about this EMO being a cult: Now I know what to look 4 in some of the young kids of today.
Thanks!!
Just throwing it out there to make things more complicated…
There’s emo, but then there’s also “scene,” “Indie” and “hardcore”
To be perfectly honest, I’m not entirely sure anyone actually knows the difference between the four, but trust me, if you call an indie kid, hardcore, it’s like calling an Japanese person Chinese….
Basically though:
Scene is the style of emo (fringe, girl pants, band Ts, etc.)
Emokids are scene kids who are depressed
Indie…I have no clue what that is, honestly, I thought Indie was a type of record label, not a genre of music
Hardcore: very similar to emo, except with harder music, little to no stigma of cutting (unless they are confused as emokids), and subtle nuances about their styles of dress are different
and then punk and goth, but those have both been around long enough I don’t feel the need to define those…
Personally…I’m a punk/hardcore kid….but all of these are at least somewhat related.
As for “Is emo a cult?”
umm…it’s a genre of music, is classic rock a cult? Many Classic Rock songs/bands promote harmful things like premiscious sex and drug use, does that make it evil? No. Likewise, a lot of emo bands write about bad things (e.g. suicide), but that doesn’t make them all evil; there are also many positive themes in emo songs, and very, very few bands actually glorify suicidal idealization. Furthermore, to say and emo band caused someone to commit suicide is just plain silly. That’s like saying that person A is a Christian, and then Person A did X, therefore being a Christian causes you do to X. Depending on what X is, it’s a rediculous argument. Truth is, depressed kids need a haven, emo has given one to many, perhaps not the safest, healthiest haven ever, but a haven nonetheless.
