Luke 10:21- 42
Luke 10:21-25 KJV In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. (22) All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him. (23) And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see: (24) For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. (25) And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
Lawyers expound and teach the law.
Nehemiah 8:1-3 KJV And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded to Israel. (2) And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month. (3) And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.
6 hours…..Morning to Midday
Nehemiah 8:4-8 KJV And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. (5) And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up: (6) And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground. (7) Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place. (8) So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.
Expository Teaching. Read through the word of God and then explain it. That was a teacher/lawyers job.
Lawyers job:
1) Study
2) Interpret
3) Instruct the next generation.
4) Exercise authority over the lawThis guy is a pro on the word of God.
Luke 10:25-26 KJV And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? (26) He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?
You are the expert. How do you interpret it? (The lawyer would have been used to being asked how to interpret things)Luke 10:27-28 KJV And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. (28) And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
Love God and obey Him. He doesn’t mention sacrifice.
It is one thing to say it. It is a whole other thing to actually live it. You can’t do it without God.Luke 10:29 KJV But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?
Define Neighbor
Luke 10:30 KJV And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.17 miles…..lots of twists and turns….unsafe route….robbers.
He was robbed.
Robbed = to take something from (someone) by unlawful force or threat of violence; steal from.Luke 10:31 KJV And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
He saw him. It wasn’t like he didn’t see him.
Luke 10:32 KJV And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.He looked at the guy and passed by.
Luke 10:33 KJV But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,
Samaritan had compassion. Samaritans are 1/2 Jews. They were considered corrupted bloodline. Jews and Samaritans didn’t get along.
Luke 10:34 KJV And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.He could have been attacked too. They could have been laying in wait. It could have been a trap.
Luke 10:35 KJV And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.
He basically gave the inn keeper a blank check. said get him whatever he needs and I’ll pay you back.
Luke 10:36-37 KJV Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? (37) And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
Go and do likewise.
Troubles me to see people who claim to be Christian but hate someone because of their race or social status. We are all human. By your love for one another the world will see Christ.Galatians 6:10 KJV As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
Luke 10:38-40 KJV Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. (39) And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. (40) But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
She came and said Lord don’t you care.
Luke 10:41 KJV And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
Worried, Troubled, upset.
Luke 10:42 KJV But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Only one thing really matters.
Revelation 2:1-7 KJV Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; (2) I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: (3) And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name’s sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. (4) Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. (5) Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. (6) But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. (7) He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
So busy serving, you forgot to love Me. We need to sit at His feet.
He is more worried about what you are doing WITH Him then what you are doing FOR Him.
God bless you and draw you closer to Him

A wise man in our Foundations class prayed, “God, You are less concerned with what we are doing than why we are doing it.” I thought that was excellent, going straight to our motivation of self-justification or God-honoring heart-posture.
This was an excellent blog.. thank you!
good work; as long as jesus is jesus then the bible may be “read”
@apyus - yes, It is important to read the bible. It is the Word of God. but even more important then reading the bible is asking Jesus to save you.
