Jewish Last Name
I know I don’t mention my last name on here…..and I wont be doing it publicly right now either., but how many of you would be surprised to know that it is a Jewish last name?
It’s spelling etc is Germanic Jew.
Does that surprise anyone?
I had someone not able to understand my passion for Israel. Another person (not Jewish) tell me to stop using Jewish words.
So my last name is Jewish. Does that surprise anyone?
What is the meaning/ cultural background etc of your last name?
Comments (23)
My maiden last name (Irish) was derived from the word “cana”, which means “wolf cub”
So my name meaning was “messenger lamb wolf cub” LOL
My married last name is *ahem* I guess I wont type it out, but let’s just say that we have this last name because of Great great great great grandfather (I’m not for sure how many greats) was found shipwrecked in England at a certain landmark and the landmark became his last name. Kind of like if someone found you as a baby under an Oak tree and named you Kristen OakTree. LOL
I did however find a Jewish last name in my family lineage.
My last name is English, from the English side of my family. My mom’s maiden name is Irish.
@Lamb@revelife - I like that ….. Kristen OakTree
I have Jewish & French lineage and a British last name, go figure
My married name is English; my maiden name was German. Many other cultures can be traces in the grandmothers’ and other relatives’ names. Overall, we were your typical hodge-podge Americans. Gotta love it!
My last name is Jewish as well, although I come from an East Indian background. But the place I come have had provided refuge to Jews for about 2000 years after the Roman displacement, although most have moved back since the founding of the Jewish State.
I am trying to get around to all those who commented on the site Monday. I was actually out of town until late Monday night – so I was really surprised to see how many had commented, and to see the large number of footprints left by everyone. Thanks for the offer of prayer and passing the vision I shared along. It means so much, and I really appreaciate it.

Mine is Italian. odllu though in spanish it means “bail bonds” heh go figure.
stop using jewish words? should we stop using french and spanish too? lol
My maiden name was Irish. I am a mix of German and Irish. My married name is English. I enjoy the expansion of knowledge – please keep using the Jewish words! ~ Jackie
hi or should I say shalom!
I saw you visited my site recently. Just thought I would say hello
I don’t have my real last name up here either but i think it is scottish or english from around the 1400′s or something like that.
Israel rules!
I’m German, Scotch-Irish, and Native American. My maiden name is Audrey White. The name Audrey is Old English and is derived from the Old English æðel meaning “noble” and þryð meaning “strength” The name White is Middle English. It was simply a nickname used to describe someone with fair hair and complexion. It also may have derived from the Isle of Wight (a British island), on the coast of Hampshire.
Not to be irreverent here, but when I write emails, I’d normally close with ‘shalom’ and I have no Hebrew lineage that I know of.
Why would someone tell you to stop using jewish words on your OWN blog? (rolling eyes)
My married name is welch in origin…but I believe the family heritage is traced back to Germany.
I love learning the origins of names, words and traditions….
The cultural meaning behind my birth name (last name) is English, however I’m Norweigan, Dutch, Indian, and German….a Heinz 57 if you will…lol. What are “jewish words” anyways..lol. So silly for someone to say that too you. I agree with Hennypenne……should we ask every nationality to stop using their own language because someone doesn’t like it? Be who you are Kristen; a lovely beautiful child of God
No.
Mine last name is decidedly English, dating back to before last names.
Hmm…my last name comes from…(cue google)…either Latin or Dutch. I prefer the Latin…means from the meadows.
Living in Kansas…
@txaffamily - ”hodge podge Americans”
I like that…kinda like “American mutts of mostly European descent” – the way my twin and I describe our heritage.
My maiden name is German — while there’s a good bit of “mutt” in there (English, supposedly Dutch, Cherokee Indian) … my lineage is predominantly German (my paternal great great grandmother’s maiden name was Preising, her first name was Wilhelmina … and my maternal great great grandfather’s surname was Swearingen) …
I’ve always been enamored with the Emerald Isle, and while I don’t have any Irish blood in my veins, I married a man who does — his maternal great grandparents immigrated from Ireland and their last name was Gavigan. So my daughter has Irish blood in her veins!
Alright, I’m American, so a bit of everything… Irish, French, German, Iroquois, and Dutch just off the top of my head. Then my married name Benjamin and my husbands family was German Jews.
im half Jewish, mothers side, and half catholic. but i’m not religious. my parents didnt raise me with religion.
I am (according to my late Mother) German, English, French, Polish, Irish, and Dutch. Because of some of the comments made within the family, and looking at my memory of my late Grandfather and Grandmother on my mother’s side (and she showed it too), I believe that there is Native American blood too, and Jewish on my father’s side. They were raised in a time when it probably was not acceptable to acknowledge those blood lines.
My last name appears to have come from Anglo-Saxon, and means “skilled in writing”. But, as far as loyalties, I am an American.
Both my first and maiden names are Gaelic, the 1st means Purity and the last means Lover of Churches (lol)
My married name is something that my husband and I tired to trace out on our own and have found its roots (much to our surprise) in the Holy Lands- it is named after a river that runs through Israel. And all this time he thought is was Italian and German (well, he’s that too! LOL)
For a long time we believed our last name was Scottish or French, but lately I learned that there is a Sephardic surname similiar to ours. Frankly, I think it’d be cool if it turns out that we are Jewish. I’ve always had an interest in Judaism/Jewish history. But best of all I’d finally know where my ancestors originated.
