  • Swimming in the summer

I found some really cool ideas for Swimming in the Summer. Here are some ideas for those women who want to be more modest then a regular swimsuit. (many are called a burkini)

    What are your thoughts?
    Would you wear these?
    Which is your favorite?

  • i wear a modest bathing suit. but i’m not that covered up.

  • deleted my last comment. sorry.

i deal with lots of “holiness” people from our school and frankly their obsession with dress code just grates against everything I understand about Christianity. To all of that I say Romans 14. While modesty is good in a general sense it can get downright legalistic and phariseudical and I just simply reject it. Cover your parts and be done with it. But I just don’t get the hide the hair thing (or the “don’t cut your hair if you’re a girl but don’t show wear it so it’s obvious you have any (hence the “la poof bangs and bun look characteristic of “holiness” people. Why is hair such a taboo for people? It’s HAIR- it doesn’t contain any nude body parts. Oy. It’s one thing if you live in a desert and need the protection- it’s an entirely other thing to think that’s the dress code God gave Adam and Eve.

  • I like the purple one with the flowers.  I have one similar to that, that I have worn when swimming with my friend in the pool at her Mosque, out of respect for their faith.  Most of the time I wear a standard, modest, one-piece swimsuit.  If I’m walking around out of the water I tend to put on a pair of shorts or a skirt because it is so hard to find nice swimsuits that aren’t high-cut these days.

  • I enjoy swimming for exercise (I swam competitively for several years when I was younger). I also spend a lot of my summers water skiing, so I usually wear one piece swim suits. I understand the idea behind these suits, but I think that they would make it more difficult for me to swim or ski.

  • Um, wow. I wouldn’t wear one being a guy, but that looks just a little ridiculous. Maybe even a little legalistic.

  •  I wear a suit with a skirt… but I would not wear any of the above in the ocean, as the waves grab loose cloth and it presents a danger.  I remember mentioning – MENTIONING – wearing a tshirt over my swimsuit to my dad and he went nuclear.  A lil skirt or board shorts isn’t bad – that much cloth looks like it would be.  (This would be in the Pacific, in waves you can surf on – flat Atlantic/Gulf coast waves might be fine, certainly a swimming pool would be fine).  Just something to consider!

  • I’d wear one for fun and to get a reaction… That’s about it though. It doesn’t seem very swimmable. I like their concept, but not so much the how. It just seems anti-swim, almost. n.n; Haha. I do need to get me a pretty modest one piece soon, though. Anyone know where I can find some decent ones?
Oh, btw, I really liked the first one, the black and white one, and the last polka dot one (just because it seems like fun, especially with the legging thingies). :) hehe

  • @MakinzyKrysteen - Yeah, I believe that too, I think.

  • @MakinzyKrysteen - Same issues. After years of completive swimming, I’m not going to wear anything that drags me down.

  • My wife wears one piece swimsuits, but I don’t think she would try one of these even though they look nice.

  • @MakinzyKrysteen - @Hearthrose - @akarui_mitsukai - @trunthepaige -
These are made out of the same type of thing that wetsuits that people use to swim and deep sea diving and stuff like that. SO it is not like they soak up the water and bog you down or anything. I actually saw a picture of one lady who was a lifeguard and wears one of these.

  • Interesting.  I can still feel the play of the waves in my skirted suit…. but I tell you, if they come out with a longer-skirt, tshirt version, I”ll be in line to buy it.

  • I really like the black and white one, very cute!!!!! I would so wear it!

  • nope. I for sure would not wear one.

    1. I don’t believe in co-ed bathing. suit or no suit.

    2. if I was swimming it would be with my family so I would feel so need to be that covered. (not that I would wear a bikini!)

    3. Even if I went in public totally covered, other people would not be, and that makes me uncomfortable. I do not want to see them anymore than I want them to see me.

    4. I think the suits – thought they “cover”- are very very tight and reveal way too much of a woman’s form than I am comfortable with in a public setting.

  • I think there is modest, and then there is taking it too far. I think this takes it a bit too far.

  • They don’t look like swim suits.

  • The one on the top far right is very cute, I wouldn’t wear it personally (too hot on the coast!)! I like to wear one pieces with shorts.

  • I can’t… really understand this. I think this transcends even ultra-conservative modesty (from an American standpoint, anyway.) I realize it must be in correlation with your religion (the hair-covering part pretty much gave that away) but … I can’t see it appealing to someone who didn’t follow your faith. Too covered… and no matter how easy it is to swim in, I promise it wouldn’t fly with most people. (Again, though, people must do it out of religious conviction – so right there you have a huge issue.) I would never, ever wear something like that – not only because I am not of that faith but also because even normal one piece suits are just not “me.” I don’t care if others wear them, they just bother me. Anyway – very interesting post… rather eye opening.

  • I myself have no problems with normal bathing suits. Though I do have a problem with overheating, so I would probably not wear one of those. But I have always thought it was highly unfair that women who have taken on hijab cannot swim. It’s good that they have real swimsuit type options.

  • I like the purple one with white flowers. But I won’t wear that kind of swimsuit. I usually just wear one piece swimsuits.

  • I like the black and white, which is the 5th photo, but would be more likely to wear the 4th photo, because I don’t think I have a good enough figure to wear the other one.

  • I haven’t checked in on your in a very long time. Previous to my last hair cut, I didn’t cut my hair for likely 3-4 years. I cut it when my Great Grand Mother Hazel Weaver died, because I believe to cut your hair out of grief is a showing of deep respect. If she were alive she wouldn’t likely have wanted me to cut my hair, I can live without cutting it, I had easily 4 foot of hair at my longest point, but it was a lot.

it easily took 3 days to fully dry my hair every time I washed it, I was not physically able to brush it myself, I literally had my Husband brush it, because if I even attempted to do it myself it tangled. That lead to huge knots I then was unable to remove.

So I’m not saying much but I am going to say, anyone who thinks they are about to grow their hair long had better know right out its a commitment.

You have to ration how often its washed. Too much shampoo you dry it out, you get spit ends. Too little washing, it picks up dirt, lint, smells ect.

Will I go long again? I’m unsure at this point.

  • I, personally would not wear those swimsuits…not only because I would absolutely ROAST in them….but also because I simply dont have the figure to do it…I was trying to invision my roly poly figure….filling out one of those clingy things and I was chuckling to myself!!! I do not want to appear disrespectful to you and to your beliefs at all….but I feel like this is a little more than is really necessary for “modesty”. I think that it is possible to wear a conservative one piece swim suit and not appear to be trying to attract the eye of every male that wanders by. To my way of thinking ( as the mother of 3 grown daughters)…modesty is as much a “state of mind” as it is what you have on your body.
    Just a thought!!

  • Im not to crazy about the floor one and the pockka dot one or other wise Id wear one of them

  • I think if I felt like I had to wear that, I would just never go swimming at all…

  • I dont know what to say here…I believe in covering my head and dressing modestly but wow…I think there is a point where you can go to far. My hair is short/long. (SHort to some and long to others) I think this is something that is taken to far…I do think everyine should be covered modestly  but there is nothing wrong with wearing a modest one peice with a pair of shorts….=) And yes if I had to wear that I would never swim!! And thats all I do in my free time in the summers…=) Court.

  • Methinks I like purple w/ white flowers best.  I’ve written article on modest swimsuit, part in researching on what to do when my little girls become teens.  If I’m to go swimming, it will be just this family which is us OR female-only swim session where everybody is willing to wear their old dresses w/ leggings or ultra-conservative swimsuit.  I really dislike swimming with other males present whom is not my dh.

  • Honestly? I wouldn’t wear one. But then again, I never liked excessive modesty anyways. Plus, I imagine I would feel smothered and claustrophobic in something like that. I wore something like that to go white water rafting and felt miserable.

I like tanning too much too.

  • Nope. There’s a much better way to be modest then suffer from heat stroke. I’ll pass.

  • I’m all for modesty, but my opinion is that these are going to far.  How is one supposed to swim freely in these?  I will agree that the first one shown is beautiful and that I might wear it, if the occasion called for it.

  • I don’t think I would wear any of these…except the black and white one in the lower left, it’s really cute.

  • I’d wear these simply because I burn rather than tan, and these would be a great way for me to get to swim in the summer and not worry about getting burned so badly. And honestly, at my weight, I’d feel more comfortable at a public pool and such in this, because I do believe in modesty for myself.

  • I love those suits! This is how all women should dress when going swimming! (I’m black American and Christian, but I still cover! (head and body).

  • @Charity_the_So_Called_Artist - really? cuz I just read a comment here: http://thegreatbout.xanga.com/704529124/christians-and-swimwear/ where you said that you wear a bikini with shorts.  Did you change your mind recently?

  • I really like the black and white one actually. I don’t know how I’d feel about going into the water with that many clothes on, I’d feel stifled, but when I’m older I might want to revisit these. I wonder if they make ones this nice that don’t cover the hair?

  • @IrisLoamsdownofDeephallow - Yeah actually I did. ^^ XD Not going to lie. The bikini top fit better, all the one pieces at the store were too er… “non supportive” and kind of squashed me. If you know what I mean. Either way, I still wear the shorts.

  • I found a link here from Revelife.

In any case, I would never wear this because it seems WAY to legalistic. There are ways to cover yourself decently, I believe, without the discomfort. With regards to the wetsuit material…I’ve gone scuba diving, snorkeling, tubing etc. in REALLY cold water where the wet suit was necessary…but I HATED it. It restricts movement, is clingy and altogether awkward. As a lifeguard, I would never guard in that, although I don’t doubt that you could swim in it, I do question how FAST you could swim in it. As an ex-competitive swimmer, I would never swim in that, although I WILL say that it does look like a pretty (some of them) full body suit with a built in swim cap. Nonetheless, I wouldn’t wear it for leisure as it just looks uncomfortable, and since it’s made out of that wetsuit material as mentioned before, it DEFINITELY would be uncomfortable, and as previously mentioned as well, hot. =S ugh. And for guarding purposes I think it would hinder how well you could get to your victim therefore increasing the chances of them drowning…and well competitive purposes are pretty self explanatory.

So I guess the ONLY reason I would wear one is if one of my muslim friends requested that I wear one at their parties or something…and that only out of respect for them.

  • I’m ’bouts to get one now.

  • Whenever I read your comments you put on other blogs, I imagine you having an old lady, Indian voice. That’s just what it sounds like when I read it in my head. I know I’m stereotyping, but I just thought it was kind of funny and silly and it might make you laugh a little. :D <3

  • @MissXMorbidx - As a 27 year old mother of three it does make me laugh a bit :)

  • Lol- “swimwear for nuns- call now and order your’s now!!!”

Honestly, add a veil and you could be Muslim….

  • @Lynnjynh9315 - They are made by a Muslim. Many Muslim women wear them to swim and other women who wish to be most wear them. So actually….even though you were “trying” to be funny. They are already made for Muslims. Nothing needs to be added.

  • @Kristenmomof3 - And that’s perfectly fine, I suppose, as long as it is their choice. I guess I just wasn’t aware of this fact- I had assumed that you were Christian or possibly Jewish… but if this is not true, than I apologize. I certainly meant no insult- either to you or to Muslims.

If necessary- I can still remove the comment if you still find it offensive.

  • I like the pink with polka dots. but i’m not sure if i would where them because i don’t know how well they would swim or how hot they would be to wear. i agree about not wearing your bra and panties in public, but most people don’t look at it that way.

  • ironically, i’m leavin in like ten minutes to get me a new suit

  • Those are just ridiculous. I’m perfectly comfortable in my bikini…if guys want to look, that’s not my problem.

  • I honestly think that going this far for a religion is rediculous. Why not show off the body you eat healthy and work out to get? I don’t care what the bible says or what any god above says. I like my bikini. I like my body, and I will show it off as I please.

  • I admire you very much for finding these and for being so convicted to follow all ideals of your faith, even when swimming!    For me… I have no problem with this swimwear at all. I think its quite creative actually…! Now, I wouldnt wear it myself normally, because I have not been convicted to cover up that much, but I would not mind wearing it if I were to visit you and your friends
