my mom thinks they’re stupid for having so many kids, but if the kids are happy & taken care of I don’t see a problem
ps: I’m sure you’ve had this question a million times (sorry) but I’m interested as to why you wear a veil sometimes
I think thinks its totally awesome that she’s having another baby (coming from some one not really a part of the whole quiverful movement!) . I see them on t.v. and they are all well behaved, well educated people. And they have done all this without going into debt! Even with the little bit they “get” from being on tv, that is still a feat, as most people have issues raising their normal size families on regular pay.
I have no issue with a husband and wife having many children as long as they are raising them to be good citizens, you know what I mean?
I think people get hateful because of of the lack of understanding. Maybe they are jealous of the Duggar’s ability to raise children or be so fertile. In the past I did a web search on them, and its absolutely appalling the number of negative posts and websites about them. People attack them with pure hatred, and sadly I think it represents the growing hatred against having children and families.
I think it is great they can take care of some many children.
Oh they are be picked on again? Some people are control freaks and do not like it that someone is doing something so deferentially that would do.
@trunthepaige - Yes. People are starting up again because they announced that they are pregnant again
@tkmuskrat - Yes, somethings that are being said are so nasty
@Kristenmomof3 - It is just a control issue. Usually the worst are those who would claim an open mind and would call others judgmental.
Its because society these days are saying you shouldn’t have more then 2 or 3 children. Culture right now is saying children are not that important, or are annoyances that get in the way(they may not say it outright, but you can see it in the abortions/waiting/or not having any kids at all). Its sad, but at least this family is doing what is right, they value children and see them as a gift or blessing. Many people do no get it at all.
im ok with them.
I’m not sure why people are so mean to them. It’s just the path they have chosen. Maybe people feel that raising the girls to wear dresses is a form of oppression or that the children are not being given a chance to live lives filled with modern conveniences such as TV, video games, and so on. People view everything from their own vantage point so it’s very hard to know what their real motivation is.
As for not having children- I think that children are very important, however I do not feel that it would be fair to a child to bring them into my current marriage situation (my husband struggles with several illnesses). So, while children are wonderful and important to me, I have chosen to wait to have children until their parenting situation would be better. How well would I be able to care for a child while caring for my husband and working three jobs to make a living? – Not very well, I’d say.
I don’t see anything wrong with the Duggars. I actually admire them.
I think the Duggars are wonderful and inspirational!!! I have isues with the “Octomom”, but the Duggars do a large family well and with a lot of love. God bless them! I had no idea they were expecting again!
I suppose I will be the first voice of dissent. I don’t hate the Duggars, they seem like nice enough people, but we already have too many people in the world, issues with the environment caused by humans, and tons of kids who need adopting around the world–they could have gotten a few of those kids into their home instead of reproducing en masse and bringing more people into the world who will pollute and use up limited resources.
I say go for 20
I’ve watched their show “18 Kids and Counting” on TLC, and I have to say, they are definitely not the psycho cultish crazies I first assumed they were. I like them, but I personally think it’s selfish to have THAT many kids when there are so many children in this world who need to be adopted. I think the more Christian thing to do would be to adopt as many of those children as possible, because after all, the less kids there are in the system might cause some mothers to choose adoption over abortion.
But if I remember correctly, Michelle (the mom) is in her 40s now…shouldn’t she be nearing menopause? Any children she has now are at risk of being born with Down Syndrome and other genetic defects. And it can’t be too good for her body either.
I would not want to have that many children myself but I have absolutely no problem with the Duggars and their “quiverfull” of children. They are raising their children in the fear of the Lord and they seem to be doing a wonderful job of it. I certainly respect them more than “Octomom” or even “Jon and Kate’. They are doing all of this without going into debt, without relying on the government to support them in anyway. I say live and let live.

And another thing…with so many kids and so many responsibilities, how on earth do they find the time, energy, and privacy to, um, make more babies??????
I haven’t even heard of them until now. I imagine that other people are uncomfortable with the idea of having multiple children due to the time, costs, and effort that it takes to raise 1, 2, or 3 kids according to society’s standards of school, tutoring, baseball, football, ballet lessons, and the like. I can almost hear Society asking “how would you end up with a quality kid?” or “How can you ensure they meet your (and Our) expectations?” Having a large family can be difficult, but if the parents have the means and the love necessary, then I’m not sure poor judgement of them is warranted.
I think the Duggars are a BEAUTIFUL family! My husband and I have decided for several reasons that we will not be having anymore children ourselves (we have 3), one day we would like to get into fostering though, but I love seeing families like this, that can manage a large family so beautifully.
I think the Duggars are to be admired. They are raising a godly seed to the Lord in a day — and by the looks of things are doing an excellent job of it — when the rest of America is murdering hundreds of thousands of babies a year because of selfishness.
:O
Are all the kids theirs? How did that even happen, the parents don’t look that old? Where did they find the time?!
And, as long as they are happy, why should anybody else be at all bothered? It’s their life, and their family.
As long as they are happy and aren’t on serious welfare then I think that we should let them be. Actually I think its lovely.
@mandamom2many - we (unless a miracle) are done at three too
I don’t keep up with the Duggars. I wouldn’t know about them except for my Yahoo front page and Xanga posts. I don’t watch TV and I don’t read magazines (except Family Circle, which my grandma pays for, haha). All that to say, I don’t have much of an opinion. They’re just people living their lives to me. Being a Christian, I think the biggest part of the family size equation is asking God about it first. Some people may be called to small families and some to large families–who am I to say what God wants for each individual family? I think children are a blessing, a reward, and a big responsibility. It’s not something to be flippant about.
Maybe the Duggars are wrong and maybe they are right, but the only people who will know the answer to that question is themselves and God. ~V
ok I love the Duggars and me and my mom just got into a ummm “debate” about this last night. She is one that was called to have 2 kids(through adoption) me myself even though i am single have not done anything permanantly to stop me from having kids because someday i MAY be married again and i dont want to do anything to foil God’s plan for us.(and yes all 4 of my kids are from my first marriage when i was married and i believe in absitnence till marriage I realize this part of the post could be taken the wrong way by some people)But i believe it is in God’s hands how many kids you will have and the Duggars have been fully blessed!!!
am not mad them at all. I admire them. Personally there is no way I could do it Vut they are good stable people. they are not asking our government to pay for anything. Not a dime or food stamps!! That speaks volumes to me! I just dont see how Michelles little body can contiue at this rate much longer. Being pregnant after the age of 35 is risky, but 42?? Even harder
I’m not sure how I see this. It’s not healthy. All those kids were born pretty much one right after the other. When you’re only waiting 2-6 months after delivering a baby to get pregnant again, you end up wreaking havoc on your body. Also, while they are supporting their children, and taking care of them, which is good, it’s also that the world is so overpopulated. The fact is, every decision you make for your life effects the rest of us. You choose to have 18 kids, then you’re taking the necessary resources from other people. And for those people who say “if its not bothering you, why does it matter” I’m sorry to say your accidental ignorance is effecting us too.
I think it’s because we are such a culture of excess. We use up so many resources & we breed like crazy. I think that in the future, people will look at Americans & wonder what they were thinking. We are as a country, living beyond our means in every way & not looking at the big picture.
I don’t think many people are actually angry with them. It is just a struggle for the average person to understand the actions of the Duggar parents. Most people would not choose to give birth to 19 children for multiple reasons: a) overpopulation b) lack of good homes for many unwanted children 3) extreme expenses 4) not being able to pay as much attention to each individual child… There are more reasons too. So I think people are more shocked/intrigued/confused than angry.
I think it’s awesome! I’ve grown up around home-schooled Christian families with lots of children, biological and adopted, so I know a lot about big families. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it as long as they’re raised with love and morals, and they always have enough. And they are! More power to them!
I’m posting my thoughts (and the thoughts of a certain Xangalebrity) side-by-side tomorrow morning. (Post already written, set to publish at 8:37am Central) (Kind of an opposing views segment.)
I think they should use condoms, but really I don’t care what they do. As long as it doesn’t affect me,IDC
I think it’s their business. No one has a right to tell me I have to have 10 children (or 20) and I have no right to place those kinds of limits on anyone else. As long as they are taking care of them well and not depending on other people to to things for them, go for it. I would highly doubt my own ability to do justice to even half of that amount of children, but then I realize that nearly half of their family is old enough to help care for the other half… it’s not as if the parents are the only adults in the family. My only problem with this family is taking their private life to TV. To me, that’s just pitiful. Why would you want to entertain an already over-entertained public just because you have a big family? They are making lots of money off the fact that they have a lot of children, and to me that feels wrong. I can’t believe that this kind of publicity and fame will not create the same negative effects that contributed to the Jon and Kate situation.
As God said -Be fruitful & multiply-as you can read for yourselves there are no restrictions on how many.! My grandmother had 11 a small family back then. To say this world is in poor shape & we should limit our children is obsurd. if God gives them he will take care of them. As for the children orphaned and needing homes, there are those who can’t have children who can adopt, sponsor or what ever.
If they could have them in Bible days 15 plus they can now. It was no different then..(the world was a mess just the same) What would have happened if they would have only had 2 or 3 and there would have been no moses or abraham no noah! To each his own and if the Holy Spirit leads ,(we must follow)
I don’t care how many children they have, that is between them & God.
May they be blessed.
i don’t really have an opinion on them. they can live their lives however they want. i’m just thankful i’m not part of that family.
I love big families! They are awesome. I think as long as they are cared for and loved then have as many babies as you want.
@TodaysJourney@momaroo - You’re talking about biblical times though. Not many children made it past infancy in those days. They had to have many, many children to ensure that some would make it to adulthood. In biblical times you had high maternal fatality, miscarriages, stillbirths, infant death, young adults dying of various illnesses and diseases, etc. IF you’re going with the logic God will provide for all, you’re sadly mistaken. The days of old are gone, we as a people have gone against God with scientific medical advances that extend our lifespan and have significantly reduced infant mortality. If everyone did what the Duggars are doing can you imagine the overpopulation? People would literally be starving because of lack of resources. So in biblical times sure it was ok to pop out as many as you could, the majority of them would die anyway (whether in utero or to war/disease/illness anytime), but today we have such significant advances that infants that are born months pre-mature can live to adulthood, there is no need for the massive births like in the past.
As for my opinion of them, I think they’re insane. There is no possible way they could take care of those kids and give them individual attention. I feel sorry for the older kids having to raise the younger ones. You’re supposed to assist your parents with minor things, but it shouldn’t be on the back of another kid to raise their sibling. I figure that most of these kids are going to themselves follow what they have been taught and have children en mass. I forsee this ending up a train wreck for the children, even if the family have significant assets to support their brood now is it going to support their broods children too? So my major problem with them is overpopulation and not thinking about the future.
