DO you want to be able to control comments?
The ability to moderate comments. There are many other blogging sites out there that let you moderate comments or let comments wait to be posted until you approve them. I know of people who have left Xanga for other blogs because they wanted the ability to moderate comments.
Would you like that ability?

That’s a great idea. I’d think I’d like to be able to do that, as I do it on my bebo account. And I think it would be great if I was able to do it on my xanga too.
No, I prefer others to have the freedom to comment as they like….there is always the opportunity to block a user if it is spam.
@Zeal4living - but if the person keeps making accounts. More and more accounts faster then Xanga shuts them down and they are a know troll that loves leaving vulgar comments….would it not be better to have the ability to not have those posted rather then having to go after and delete those antisemitic comments after they are posted.
I know of a person who has been on Xanga for many many years who is thinking of leaving Xanga because of the inability to moderate comment (Other blogging sites have this ability)
I think you should be able to block an individual from a site- in other words, if the person habitually leaves vulgar or offensive comments, why should he be your friend?? On the other hand, I think the ability to edit or remove comments at will really opens up the door to being manipulative and dictating where conversations should go, and giving people the freedom to remove comments that are in disagreement. Criticism is good for us, and once we’re too good to take it, we might consider the fact that we’re not mature enough to blog. I think being able to block offensive users is good though.
While an interesting idea for personal sites, my feeling is that with blogging you should let them come. You can always delete them.
I think it is a great idea. I probably wouldn’t use it, but it would be nice to have the option to at least enable temporarily on those days when the spammers are making new accounts faster than I can block them.
@mikenpeg - You can already remove comments you don’t like so this wouldn’t change anything except giving you the ability to prevent them from ever showing up in the first place. Also, you can block people from your site that do things you don’t like already.
@Kristenmomof3 - I think it will be great if Xanga give more moderating control to its members. It is a pity that there are people who get their kick out of life by attacking people. If they are that serious moderating a blog might still be hard work. But I will support your right to moderate comments to your own blog.
I am for moderating comments. That is part of the reason I love wordpress. I get so sick of rude, obscene or attacking comments from people! I am for mature discussions, just not that immature stuff that people post :-
I think its a good idea. But I like being able to leave a post and come back to see the discussion that has occurred while I was gone. It makes things much more immediate, especially the days when I don’t have a chance to log in for long periods of time.
I don’t get many comments…. not even from trolls.
But then I don’t write for comments and am not interested in being popular on Xanga.
If I did get a vulgar comment I wouldn’t hesitate to delete and block immediately.
I am able to check xanga often though and can see it would be a problem if one couldn’t.
Sounds like a good idea to be able to moderate,
but then comments wouldn’t be current if they all sat in a file for hours waiting to be moderated before being posted, would they?
Although I can’t edit comments left by other users at my site, I am able to delete them, and that works for me. I wouldn’t edit anyone else’s comments anyway. If it’s bad enough to need editing, it’s bad enough to delete, and I’ve only done that twice since joining Xanga (and I’ve been here a good while). The way I see it, people who leave rude, obnoxious or vulgar comments only make themselves look bad, not the person who wrote the entry they’re commenting on.
I don’t find that this would be necessary, at least for me… I have a pretty quick blocking finger ;D
No. If I think comments are rude or crude I delete them. If I have to, and I have with little hesitation, blocked people. That works for me. Free speech, baby.
I think the stale comments could have a negative impact on the interaction on a piece. Sometimes it is the comments that really get the discussion going.. and xanga gets a lot more than other sites (in general). Options are good though.
It’s a good idea in theory, but I can see it being abused. And I agree with ProvokingThought that the way it is now is good for discussion.
Also, I could see people not reading other people’s blogs anymore if they’re slow to approve comments (like only doing it once every two or three days or so — people like stuff now now now).
For the plusses you’ve mentioned, I think the idea bears looking into. But ultimately, when weighed against its costs and disadvantages, it’s kinda shitty.
It seems to me that the present system of comment deletions and blocks serves the idea’s role just as well. The idea, additionally, I believe, would lead to a chilling effect on speech.
I would ‘rec this entry for its discussive value, but I don’t have any friends, so it’d be kinda useless.
