I just had an interesting thing happen today. First time ever….
I was downstairs with grandma. I come up and the answering machine light is blinking. I go to listen to the message. I can not understand a single word. Someone left a message in Spanish. Hello….if you call my house and hear my answering machine message and it is in English and I do NOT have a Spanish accent, shouldn’t that clue you in that you either A have the wrong number or B better speak English to me.
The message has been erased. I do not speak Spanish. If the person really wants to talk to me they can call back and leave a message I can understand in either German, English or Pennsylvania Dutch.
The person could not have known me though or they would know I do not speak Spanish. So Bye bye and a word of advice….if the person’s answering machine is talking a certain language it helps if you leave your message in the same language if you want to be understood.

“No habla español” has been my most used phrase the past few days.

I have a *very* clear, even inadvisably clear message on my answering machine because of random messages like that. “Hello. You have reached the (last name) household, (phone number). Please leave your message after the tone”. Not ONLY do I live in a Spanish speaking neighborhood, there is a preschool on the main street nearby with a big sign with a phone number one digit off from our own. Having that message has gotten rid of the wrong number messages almost entirely.

We get a lot of them out this way. Mostly on our cell phones.
