My kids say that all the time, and it drives me nuts. Not only because it’s a slur against gays, but also because it’s so inaccurate. Why not use a word that means what you mean, kwim?
Btw, I haven’t been here for awhile, but… when did you start dressing like a man? (profile pic)
I stopped saying that once some friends came out of the closet. They didn’t mind me using it… they used it! It just… suddenly meant something completely different.
I can’t help but say it. It’s built in my vocabulary. I have made countless efforts to stop but I can’t help it… I need to stop, though. These videos make great points. Thanks for sharing them.
@homefire - I am dressed like me. Maybe in your perception it is dressed like a man. But what makes it dressed like a mad to you? It is just perception. All you can see is the waist up. What if I am wearing a flowing black skirt on the bottom? Does that change your perception? or do you still think it is dressed like a man?
I’ve never said that. Just as I’ve never said “that’s retarded”. I’m a fan of using words the way they are meant to be used.
The second commercial was hilarious.
Whenever someone says, “That’s so gay,” I respond, “I know! I liked it too!”
But since leaving school I don’t get the chance very often.
My best friend is gay, and whenever people say that around him, he’ll say in response, “Yeah, that’s so homosexual,” (sarcastically) just to prove a point that what they are saying makes no sense whatsoever. Thanks for sharing these! There are definitely some phrases in America that need to stop being used.
I LOVE these commercials because they really hit it spot on.Epsecially the Wanda Sykes one. even though I’ve always said I will not let my 15 year old teen have a dorky mustache(I’ve always hated that lol) I was never really around any openly gay people until I moved to Oregon. Some of the first friends I had over brought her husband and her girlfriend. She asked if I was ok with it, I was like why wouldn’t I be??My ex husband was upset because of the kids I was like why is it something we hide?8 years later and 4 states away we’re still friends she was th eone who gave me the strength to leave my husband to be happy not be locked in an abusive relationship.Shortly at that time she came out as a lesbian and not a bisexual. she was so torn about coming out that way I think mainly because she had to tellhe parents that yes she only like women. I absolutley love my friend she taught me so much not only about that but of true acceptance, homeschooling, and soooo much more. She’s still one of the first ones I’ll go to for advice and guidance!
Hahaha molly and i joked about this a few years back and she said something was so German lol hilariously makes a good point. I have to admit I somehow managed to slip “retarded” into my vocabulary but Working on it.
haha i love the second commercial
I saw a similar PSA with Hilary Duff I think about a couple years ago. I think they are wonderful. I used to do this when I was a lot younger and wish I wouldn’t have. Like the PSA’s say, the word “gay” should never be used as an adjective describing something negative.
Just earlier on I came across this expression being used to describe a tv show. It is such a pointless phrase and it can cause a lot of harm. I think these videos are a very positive step.
I’ve seen the Wanda Sykes one and the one that Hillary Duff did a few years ago, too. I HATE that gay is the new slang for “bad”. There are posters at our local mall that say something along the lines of “that’s so jock” or something like that. I wish I could remember the website, but I think this is a great advertising campaign, no matter WHAT you believe. For example, even if you believe interracial marriage is wrong (I don’t CURRENTLY know anyone who thinks this way, but I used to have older relatives who believed things like that), using racial slurs is wrong. I think the same thing is true for using “gay” as a derogatory statement.
@Kristenmomof3 - Well, that particular hat and tie, in our society, are generally worn by men–that’s all I mean. Didn’t mean to criticize–I actually meant it as a joke. I figured it was a costume for some special event, because I know you’ve talked about femininity a lot and that didn’t strike me as feminine.
