He’s said it for ages.
@agnophilo – actually he has never taken a stand for same-sex marriage before which is why his taking a stand for it today is breaking news on all major news stations and facebook and everything.
I think it’s good, but his term is nearly up, so it’s probably just a publicity stunt. If he really cared so much, he could have said or done something long ago.
I say YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.
@the_peach_assailant – Well, his views back then were against gay marriage. But he said that his views are evolving, which is why he has now stated his support. I am like you, a little skeptical that it can be a gimmick for votes, but I have higher hopes that he will get something done due to his long support and views of equal rights.
@the_peach_assailant - No it’s not a stunt if you mean he’s not saying what he really feels. It’s what he really feels. And also, it’s not a stunt because he stands to lose as many people as he might gain, if not more. A big chunck of America still hates gays, so it wouldn’t be a particularly helpful stunt, he’s just finally saying what he feels and what we’ve all known he feels because he’s said it for years.
I HOPE it was a good political more for him.
I KNOW it’s the right thing to do for the people
i think it’s great and it was a courageous thing to do. i saw it pointed out that he did not have to do this politically because he already has the majority of the gay vote. once again he did did the right thing.
I have to be against him because he’s against my interests. Meanwhile, and as usual, I’m still hunting our musical friends.
@laytexduckie- @the_peach_assailant - i don’t believe it’s a gimmick for votes. he already has the support of the majority of the LGBT community and he did the right thing in spite of the political fallout he’s going to see from the right.
@the_peach_assailant - i believe he really does care. the day he came into office he faced a shipwrecked economy and two wars. the first piece of legislation he signed was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay act which gives women a legal right to be paid the same as men for doing the same work. there was TARP and the rescue of the American auto industry which would have been a devastating economic disaster had he not taken action and that could not wait. then came healthcare reform because our healthcare system as it existed was sending people into bankruptcy and the country into further economic distress. it was also a moral issue as was the fair pay act. behind closed doors he was making decisions to take out Al Qaeda leaders, over 20 and eventually Bin Laden. all the time gays were pressuring him to overturn “don’t ask, don’t tell” but it’s my belief had he taken that on in his first two years republicans would have used that issue to halt economically pressing issues. he has had to pick his battles in order of overall national economic and defense security. he said today and has in the past he felt civil unions laws could allow gay men and women to marry. so now he’s taken a stand for the right for gays to marry but had he done that earlier it would have been a political battle at a time the country was faced with greater issues. i say greater issues because the economy, two wars and defending ourselves against Al Qaeda effects everyone, straight, gay, lesbian, transgender.
@TheSutraDude - I do hold a high amount of hope in him due to his long and always-present support for equal rights.
@laytexduckie - me too. Obama’s had a lot of fish to fry, huge fish, and he’s had to outmaneuver the worst opposition i’ve seen in my lifetime to move the country forward, “the party of no”. we have to make sure we vote and get others to vote. over the past year republicans in red states have made it more difficult for likely democratic voters to vote. it’s messed up. that in itself should make anybody angry.
Good for him. I’d like to have a choice to miserable
@TheSutraDude - I know what you mean. There was an article I read somewhere where supposedly, the conservatives in certain states were making amendments to change the zoning districts that are currently ran under female democrats. As a result, you had ineligible voters moved into their districts while eligible voters were moved to more “red districts” so that even though those redesigned districts were blue, their electoral votes were pretty much obsolete. It angers me already that some of these conservatives are taking away a women’s right to choose, preventative health care that can save lives, and now they want to tell you who you can and can’t be committed to. I’m making sure I get my vote in this November.
@laytexduckie - yes the rezoning is one thing but there is more. for example, in Texas a person can no longer use a student ID to register to vote but can use a gun license. students/gun owners. who is more likely to vote for which party? in another state a 94 year old African American woman who has voted in every election since she was given the right to vote will not be able to walk into her polling station to vote this year because as is the case with many African Americans in her age group she was not issued a birth certificate. there are many more examples of what republicans are doing to suppress the vote. they’ve decided America is not for everyone and they can’t win on the issues. that’s for sure.
yeah i’m also pissed about the right wing attack on women’s right to choose and women’s health. also, Congress returned from another vacation on Monday. the first piece of legislation republicans proposed upon their return? cutting funding to Meals On Wheels, the program that delivers meals to the home bound elderly and nursing homes and cutting funding for school lunches for poor children.
i could go on but i’ll spare you haha.
@TheSutraDude - Oi vey. And if you read GodlessLiberal’s entries, he posted a video about a representative who wrote up a bill to protect gun owners from being fired from their jobs, since she is against discrimination. However, she voted no on protecting LGBT from job discrimination. As for others, I’m pissed at the Senate for not reaching a deal for preventing student loan interest rates from doubling. The Repubs want to pay for that legislation by taking money out of preventative health care funds. And yeah, we’ll leave it at that for now. Hahahah. Mission Don’t Let Mitt In The White House is commencing.
@laytexduckie - haha i did see the vid on GodlessLiberal’s post. the interviewer asked her for examples of gun owners being fired and she answered she doesn’t like getting into examples. then she asked him for examples of gays being fired. he gave her plenty haha.
yeah fire Mission Don’t Let Mitt In The White House. i like the sound of that.
I rather enjoy seeing anti-gay conservatives trying to rationalize their anger.
He said the opposite in the last election. Then, surprise, surprise, a poll shows that it would be well received if he changes his position, and poof it’s changed. Hardly courageous. His views on human rights vary with the political winds, and what he says rarely matches what he does. Far too little, far too late.
i think its a great idea everyone should be allowed to get married.im all for it.except for family though.
This mini goes so great with the theme and your topic that I just coudn’t resist it, but don’t let it go to your head
@sweethearthoney85 -
are you concerned that’s going to be some big movement now? I want to marry my Daddy DAMMIT WAH!
@anonymous - ANONYMOUS COWARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ashamed of who you really are, well you totally ought to be, LOL. At least you know it’s true. What a fucked up existence you must be force to endure
I applaud him for his vote of equality for all.
@TheSutraDude - Obama said he consulted his wife about gay marriage. But since Michelle hasn’t been gay a day in her life what can she possibly know about the subject. Wasn’t that what you guys said about Anne Romney viz a viz not knowing about economics because she was a nothing but a lowly housewife?
The truth is Obama accomplished nothing except pulling in a lot of campaign cash. He said the issue should be left up to the states, which means NC acted properly and he didn’t sign anything into law.
This is just more bogus flim flam from the Regime of flim flam.
@PrisonerxOfxLove - wrong again Loborn. i never said that about Mrs. Romney. one doesn’t have to be gay to have an opinion on civil rights. Obama didn’t claim he was going to legislate on the issue federally. he was asked what he thinks. he answered. that should be simple enough even for you. stop wasting peoples’ time with your flim flam arguments.
@TheSutraDude - Name calling. Incivility. Yes you must be an Obama voter.
@PrisonerxOfxLove - “you’re hilarious” sound familiar?
@TheSutraDude - Your abusiveness, hostility and anger is all too familiar, yes.
@PrisonerxOfxLove - have fun on Xanga
@TheSutraDude - Now that we’re having fun, please explain why what Obama did was not totally useless. Claiming that he was advised by his wife and kids is preposterous. And he signed nothing into law or even purposed any legislation. He even said that this issue should be left to the states which makes makes what North Carolina did totally proper.
All he did was hoodwink a bunch of suckers into opening their wallets. At George Clooney’s gala that meant $40,000 dollars to get through the door.
Loborn asked why what Obama did was not totally useless. since Loborn is not really looking for an answer i will explain in case anyone else is. oh and Michelle Obama is not a policy adviser. President Obama said he has had conversations with his family over this issue for quite some time. it’s something people with family or friends do. ok so let me start by linking a list of gay rights legislation the Obama administration has enacted for gay citizens of the United States:
http://www.equalitygiving.org/Accomplishments-by-the-Administration-and-Congress-on-LGBT-Equality
i was going to copy and paste each but there are over 70 legislative acts.
why President Obama’s statement yesterday in support of gay marriage is not useless is he is the President of the United States. he spoke not only to this country but to the world about what this country actually stands for, equal rights for all. that some in this country do not believe in equal rights for all does nothing to devalue nor diminish what the President and people in this country who believe in equal rights for all stand for. the President of the United States said to people who wish to enter into same sex marriages, your not wrong.
there are people who think words are meaningless…except their own of course. words are powerful. there is for example a world of difference between the parents of a gay or lesbian child saying, “get the hell out of this house” and “we love and support you for who you are”. yesterday President Obama said to Americans, we love and support you for who you are. he is the first President to support gay marriage. gay or not, imagine if the President had instead said, “I don’t support who you are or your rights as an American.” this would have been the opposite of uplifting.
right now Obama is trying to push more job creation legislation against the will of a republican party that prefers to propose legislation to cut funding for school lunches for poor children, Meals On Wheels for the homebound elderly and funding to social services that come to the rescue of abused children. that is the first piece of legislation republicans proposed after returning from yet another vacation on Monday. that is their idea of cutting the budget. however they refuse to put an end to tax payer subsidies to big oil companies even though the oil company execs spoke before Congress and said they don’t need the subsidies. they have made record profits. job creation is important especially now for every American gay or straight but the President has set the stage. legislation will come be it on the State, Federal or both levels. the majority of Americans today support same sex marriage. legislation is only a matter of time.
@DivaJyoti - I’ll try not to
